I remember back when I first heard Sylvester, it was 1986 and I had seen his vidclip for "Living For The City" and decided I had to have some of his records. When next I was in the record store, I found the 12-inch for "Someone Like You" and with its Keith Haring cover art decided it was not possible for Sylvester to be more cool! Back then, I put records onto mix tapes to play in the kitchen I was working in and my co-worker Butch (who lived up to his name) commented, "That's Sylvester! He's a sissy but damn he can sang!" Butch claimed to have seen him hold court from the stage at some COGIC church he attended and regaled me with the full details of his testifying, wish I could remember those details. Luckily Sylvester's original hits showed up on CD soon thereafter and I was so thrilled to have another 'androgynous' performer to admire. I still envy his fearlessness.
